Recession Causing Stress among UK Men
A recent YouGov survey commissioned by Mind, a UK based mental health charity organisation, shows that not only are men more stressed regarding financial problems but that they are also not comfortable discussing their fears with anyone or seek professional counsel.
The study was conducted among a sample of 2000 workers. More than 40% men were found to be worried regarding their finances and more than 25% were worried about losing their current job due to recession. The situation is better in women as only about 20% of them were found to be worried about these problems. This clearly shows the effect of a gender based social role where a man is usually considered the breadwinner and thus has the obligation to maintain an inflow of money.
Men are also 50% less open to the idea of discussing such issues with their friends as compared to women. 69% of them do not want to discuss this with their families either while in case of women the percentage is much lower at 53%. Men also tend to feel embarrassed in talking to a doctor regarding stress, causing a large population to fall into depression.
Mind emphasised the need to take immediate action and said that both employers and the government should make an effort for it. Even medical practitioners should take the gender factor into account while treating patients for stress.
